Best Time to Visit Costa Rica: A Month-by-Month Guide

One of the most common questions we hear from people planning a Costa Rica trip is some version of: "When should I go?" Honestly? There is no bad time to visit, but there are absolutely better times depending on what you're after, how you feel about crowds, and what your budget looks like.

Costa Rica doesn't run on a single high season like most destinations. It runs on two: the dry season (locals call it verano, or summer) and the green season (called invierno, or winter; confusingly, this is actually the rainy season). Each has real advantages, and experienced travelers tend to have strong opinions about which they prefer. We'll walk you through both.

This guide breaks down every month of the year so you can plan with confidence. We'll cover the best timing for surfing, sea turtle watching, whale watching, birdwatching, and more, with a strong focus on the Nicoya Peninsula and Nosara.

The Two Seasons at a Glance 🌞🌧️

Dry Season: December through April

This is peak travel time on the Pacific coast. You get reliable sunshine, low humidity, clear ocean water, and roads that are actually manageable. National parks are fully open, tour operators are running full schedules, and the weather is almost boringly perfect.

The trade-off: prices are higher and popular places fill up fast. In Nosara, Manuel Antonio, and Tamarindo, you'll want to book three to six months in advance for the holiday windows: late December, New Year's, and Semana Santa (Holy Week). The landscape gets drier and more golden as the season wears on, still beautiful but less dramatically green than the rainy months.

Best for: first-time visitors, families, beach holidays, national park visits, road trips, and diving (the water is clearest).
