The Nicoya Peninsula Blue Zone: Why People Live Longer Here

On a stretch of Pacific coastline in northwestern Costa Rica, something remarkable happens: people grow old without becoming frail. Men and women in their eighties farm, dance, and laugh. Centenarians, people who've crossed the 100-year mark, are not curiosities here. They're neighbors, grandparents, part of the natural order of things.

This is the Nicoya Peninsula. One of five places on Earth where researchers have documented unusually long lives, especially among older men.

The term Blue Zone was coined by demographers Gianni Pes and Michel Poulain in 2004 and popularized by National Geographic author Dan Buettner, who later worked with them and a team of longevity researchers to identify other longevity hotspots. They set out to find places where the data showed anomalous concentrations of centenarians and supercentenarians, and to understand why.

The Science: What the Numbers Actually Show 🔬

This isn't folklore. The longevity of Nicoya Peninsula residents is backed by hard data.

A 2013 study in the Vienna Yearbook of Population Research found that a 60-year-old Nicoyan man had about seven times the probability of reaching 100 of a Japanese man, along with 2.2 more years of life expectancy. The advantage was found in men, not women.
